4 SEAS - what is this?

The 4 SEAS Project is a consortium of institutions and organizations which address marine issues in each of the countries participating in the project: Italy, Great Britain, Ukraine, and Poland. The project focuses on the local environments and issues linked to the seas surrounding Europe: the Baltic Sea, the Black Sea, the North Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. More information can be found at the project's official website - www.4seas.eu.

Aim

The aim of the project is to bring closer together all aspects regarding life in the seas and the lives of European residents living in coastal zones through a wide variety of initiatives, events, workshops, and permanent exhibitions that will be mounted at the Gdynia Aquarium in the coming months.

Inauguration

Saturday April 4, 2009 was the date the first class for school-aged children were held under the auspices of the 4 SEAS program. The class was entitled 'Adventures with European Seas'. Children from primary schools learned about the flora and fauna of the four European seas, with an emphasis on those of the Baltic Sea. Then the children participated in workshops in which they opened up the Sailor's Chest and discovered the treasures that had been collected by the Britons, Italians, Ukrainians and us, the Poles. These treasures comprised objects associated directly with the seas and with the lives of the residents and cultures of the different coastal regions.

These lessons inaugurated a series of lessons, events, meetings, and workshops that will be held as part of the project for the coming ten months. All of these events will be held at the Gdynia Aquarium, and information will be posted continually at the Aquarium website - www.akwarium.gdynia.pl

Five ways to help save the seas
    1. save water and limit the amount of detergents you use
    2. support local pro-ecological initiatives
    3. don't leave your litter - leave only good memories
    4. save energy - use energy efficient light-bulbs and switch off electric devices when not in use
    5. buy only fish products that come from sustainable catches
This international project is funded by the European Union Seventh Framework Programme.
